Truth is, far fewer people have experienced the holyhappystresskablamity of choosing an agent than of choosing a college. Both choices represent an amazing chance in life. But beyond that, could they be parallel in nature? I mean, first we have...
Something went down to make this agent part of the elite. Maybe they only accept queries by request. Maybe they just made The Biggest Deal in the History of Deals OMGWTFBBQ. Maybe they were bitten by a radioactive spider and can now climb the walls of publishing houses, place your manuscript at the top any reading pile, and make a swingy getaway! YES.
Or maybe they take part in a circa-1902 sports league that somehow makes them and their fellow agentletes the best agents in the land. Whatever it is, their rockin' reputation makes writers everywhere go wild, which might explain their .03% acceptance rate. But forreals, there's life beyond the Agent League! Which leads us to...
THE SMALL LIBERAL ARTS AGENT
Choose a Small Liberal Arts Agent, and you've chosen a friend. They might not have tons of name recognition yet, but they'll put all the love and effort that is logistically possible into your sparkly future together. Need help with these line edits before you leave for Fiji next week? Sho thang! Need a characterization tutor for that big revisions deadline? Here, they'll hook you up.It's true that hand-holding isn't something they're afraid to do, which comes in handy when you're having a mental breakdown over a plot arc at 3AM, but which might strike some as overkill. In fact, clients may become subject to the Agent Bubble, in which everything is so perfect and awesome that you kind of, um, forget about, um, the terrifying real world. But it's so awesooome!
Because they're pretty busy, the client experience might not be as personal - you may or may not have held an epic rager in your dorm room last weekend without them noticing. But freedom can be a good thing, and when you really need 'em, they're there for you. Specifically, when you need to spend the entire day in the nurses' ward, whispering at people to turn the lights down and stop yelling so loudly when they talk. Shh. Shhhh.
THE ART AGENT
These agents are mega serious about their craft. They know what they want from you - bangin' writing - and they expect you to know what you want. Because dudes? This business is tough. Their approach may be unique, but for those who click with it, it's a dream come true. The Art Agent will make it clear that you may be living on steamed cardboard in a one-room studio for a while. You may be rejected until all the unicorns and rainbows disappear. (Noo!) But when you strike gold, it's the Art Agent who will have clobbered you into the fine specimen of an artist you are that day. Yay for clobbering!
In the end, the act of choosing an agent and of choosing a college are similar for one simple reason: this is the future we're talkin' about. It's the dawn of a new relationship, one that'll help you get a paying job - in this case, as a writer at a publishing house. Plus, as Hannah astutely points out, if things don't work well, there's always the option of transferring.
'Course, when it comes to college, the real question is... ARE YOU READY TO PARTAAY? No, that's not a real question.
I may have finished a novel and gotten an agent (Suzie, you are my Small Liberal Arts Ivy League dream-muse), but I'm still procrastinating the applications that'll actually get me into college. Should probs start those... after the partaay! Which school-agent type would you prefer? Or, if you've made it past the gates, which one rocks your world?

The art agent. All of them. Oh college, oh agents. My head is spinning.
Love this analogy! I definitely love hand-holding agents, so I may have to go the liberal arts route on this one. Good luck with college apps!
Love this! Just started college so I can definitely relate. I'd choose the liberal arts one fo sho :)
I love this analogy. So many agents I just don't know who to choose from. Is there a big state, ivy league, art agent I can pick. :)
I totally would love a Small Liberal Arts Agent. I want us to be BFFs! :D
(Adorable post, btw.)
Great post! I would love to have a liberal arts agent. Although I'm not picky. :)
I'm happy w/ my big state agent! Can't wait for the post about which college you choose! :)
Due to the fact that I go to a small liberal arts college that has been the perfect fit the entire time I've been here, I'm going to have to say I'd love the Liberal Arts Agent. I'm used to a Bubble, so why not have an Agent Bubble too?
Good luck with that! I'm super glad all that college stuff is behind me, lol. But I'm not anywhere close to needing an agent, so I'm not sure which I'd want. They all sound fabulous!
I adore this analogy, it's so spot on! I would love for the Small Liberal Arts or Art agent, but as long as we click, I'm happy.
this is brilliant. LOVE.
Ah! The words 'small liberal arts' together make me squeal with happiness. So I think we know what agent/college I prefer. :D
Great post, as always!
Love love love this. I think I'd choose the Art Agent because I seriously need some clobbering to get my writing into gear :D ahaha
This was really funny and a great analogy! You see things in such a creative and awesome way, Emilia. As for which one I'd prefer, the Small Liberal Arts College Agent, I'm sure. I like hand-holding. But The Art College Agent sounds like my type of agent too.
Thanks for the laughs!
Thank you so much for the comments, guys! Love them :D
Lindsay - I'm sure there is. Hee!
Mina - I adore your logic. Nearly all the colleges on my list are libarts. It's irresistible!
Love this post! As I was reading, I kept thinking, "wait, which one am I?" Glad I'm a combo :)
AH! I'll take any of them (collegey or agenty)!
Emilia, you have reminded me that I've only answered like six questions so far on the Common App. Hope your college search is going epically amazingtastic! :D
I like Liberal Arts cuz I'm a newbie and I worry I need all they help they can give. But I might not like all the handholding.
I think State might be best for me.
I need handholding so definitely libarts, hahaha, with maybe a bit of arts mixed in because I need clobberish handholding, if that makes sense :p
I freaking love this post, haha.
Oh my, it really does give you a lot to think about. I'm not sure. I haven't even started querying but it's something I should be looking into in the near future. *Runs around like a headless chicken*
Brilliant post, it really puts things into a new light. I shall have to think about which agents fall into what categories and whether they are what I am looking for.
I really like the way you've compared agents to colleges :) Well said and put together.
I'd go for the Liberal Arts agent.
P.S: I'm so glad that in Australia we don't need to write essays for college/university! Only in Stuido/Graphic Arts, Music and Dance you need to provide a portfolio and maybe a statement. Universities rarely interview prospective students.
Great analogy! I just realized that I'd probably prefer a Liberal Arts agent, but I've been querying the Ivy League and State University ones - DUH! I went to a small Liberal Arts college, so I guess I'm just that kind of a gal. Thanks for helping me figure it out!
It's so cool how everyone has a different fit. So glad to have helped y'all! <3
MJ and Meg and Brave... we shall face the monster of college togethaaa. hehe
I am highly amused by this especially the 1st and 3rd descriptions! :)
Terrific work! This is the type of information that should be shared around the web. Shame on the search engines for not positioning this post higher!
