Man, January - it went by so fast! Seems like just yesterday ol' Jan and I were frolicking together in the Field of Apocalyptic Thundersnow... I mean, Dreams. Yeah, that.
Well, I hope you all had a fabulous first month to your 2011! Mine went by fast, I think, because I've been all wrapped up in this wacky new book I've been working on. It requires constant attention, and I feel like I need to be with it constantly, otherwise it's going to fall off the table and break its head open. Not unlike...
A KITTEN.Drawing this parallel might seem crazy, and it's true that my kitten-obsessed brain is only bringing up the subject now as an excuse to spam pictures. HOWEVER, if you ask me, the process of effectively raising a kitten and of effectively developing a new Work-in-Progress are purdy darn similar!
Skeptical? Here's an unsolicited guide to caring for your new WIP... kitten-style!
STEP 1: PREPARE FOR ARRIVAL (Gather Thoughts)
Prep time! Whether you prefer to write a 10-page outline or, y'know, just sit in contemplation for a few minutes, the objective here is to create an open, yet safe environment for your new WIP (i.e. no exposed electricity sockets). Build up an idea of what you want to achieve with your writing-household's newest addition. This will be a journey with lots of twists and turns, so stock up now on inspiration, patience, and pet fur rollers. Vamos!
STEP 2: BRING IT HOME (Start Writing)
You've gone to the Idea Shop - or even better, your local Idea Rescue center - and come home with a WIP to call your own. Now it's time to test the waters! Write a little, introduce characters, and observe how the WIP reacts when you try new things, like dangling a piece of string in its face. (Answer: ADORABLY.)
Take this time to let your heart fill with boundless love for your new bundle of joy. Why? Because as little WIPpy grows and learns how fun it is to mutilate furniture, you may become frustrated and wonder what you got yourself into. It'll all be worth it, of course! (Right? Right.)
STEP 3: TRAIN IT (Get Serious)
During this stage, the WIP is the most fragile it'll ever be. It can't be pushed too hard to be perfect, or it will crack under the pressure; moreover, it can't be left on its own for too long without nurturing, or it will forget its previous progress and start ripping up your couch. You're building a literary foundation made from dedication and determination. So type with passion - full steam ahead!
STEP 4: LET IT GROW (Write That Thang)At this point, your WIP should be gaining some autonomy. It's no longer just an idea or the fragile beginnings of a story: it is a full-blown Work (In Progress). As long as you don't stop feeding it entirely (nom nom, wordage) or forget about its existence, it will thrive. Yay!
Is it slightly less adorable, less full of endless possibilities? Sure. But with that loss of adorability comes a beautiful sense of knowing each other, of loyalty, of great days to come. Even if you worry sometimes whether it's plotting to kill you, this WIP of yours is a great friend to come home to.

Great advice-love the comparison to kittens. I am smack dab in the middle of a new WIP so this was perfect!
Okay that first kitten picture...OMG!
I'm in the middle of revising my WIP. Which I guess is like disemboweling my kitten and gluing it back together. Hmm, I guess the analogy doesn't work for revisions.
Step 5: cry when it shreds your sofa to pieces.
Step 6: realize kittie has right idea and invite her to be your crit partner.
I had a kitten years ago. You don't want to know what happened to it. But let's just say there was some jealousy issues when a real baby joined the family and he ran away from home (the cat not the baby).
I love this: "Because as little WIPpy grows and learns how fun it is to mutilate furniture, you may become frustrated and wonder what you got yourself into. It'll all be worth it, of course! (Right? Right.)" And of course, the KITTENS!
Great advice. and the kitten pics = awwww.
Lol, great comparison. Right now, I'm debating between finishing the first draft of one story, or starting a fresh idea that won't leave me alone. They're both contemporary YA pieces--maybe I should just flip a coin. :)
I'm laughing at this so hard because my cats are the antithesis of writing.
Ah... I love kittens. And this post.
how I love you and your metaphors.
Renae - So glad to be of service! <33
Kara - IT IS LIKE A BEAUTIFUL DOLLOP OF WONDER.
Tracey - hehehe... unless you want to get into a horror movie :D (what am I saying? bad Emilia, bad!!)
Stina - Aww *hugs*! ): I can't imagine. Re: sofa... they sure put love into their destruction, gotta give them that :)
Sarah - It is always worth it. Even if it's just your addled brain convincing that it is. hehe! <3
Pam - Love the coin flipping idea! There's nothing like fate to decide things... and of course, there's that moment when the coin's about to land and you know what you ~want~ it to be. Mega good luck with whichever one you choose! <3
Kirsten - I adore YOU and your youness. Yup.
Lindsay & Gracie - They're impossible not to love. & thank you so much! :)
Hi Emilia,
huge fan of your blog, but i absolutely loved this post it was a super huge help for me and my wip. love your blog!
Oh, Emilia. How I love thee! This was wonderful, and so true (although I have to say I am a dog person GASP). Currently, I'm between Steps 1 and 2 with my latest WIP. Me and WIPpy are getting our first looks at each other. She's sniffing the fresh new toys I just bought her. I'm smiling at her and also a little terrified. My god, I forgot about my beautiful lace bedspread. Oh, and there she goes, zipping around the room and all over the furniture like a crazy person ahhhhh!! Must--impose--structure! WHERE'S MY OUTLINE?!?
P.S. i heart youuuuuu
This post. It made me smile. There is ALWAYS an excuse to spam pictures of cute kitties =)
I'm rewriting my WIP. I'm liking it. And my MC likes to speak to me at inconvenient times, like when I'm in class or on the bus (which is only inconvenient when I'm so busy listening to her that I forget to get off the bus).
Hehe, great post Emilia!
Now I want a kitten!
I recently trunked one novel, only to start working on another. It's contemporary and I hope that I can actually go somewhere with it. I have a few paragraphs written...not much, but it's a start. :D
And now I need to go get me a kitten :)
I am currently querying one book and writing the next.
all the best with your writing.
Hey Emilia! Long time no see!! :D
I loved your comparison. And that first picture?? Soooo sweet! Thanks for sharing :D
Grace - How sweet! <33 Thank you and so glad to help! :)
Claire - OMG. I heart you times 9q28398. Yes. 9 Q 2 8 3 9 8!! :D
Steph - Oooh, how fun! Well, for your writing, not so much for your plans to get to places on time ;) Yay for kitten-resultant smiles!
Raven - I will mail one to you. Be excited... hehe! & that is definitely a start! Good luck with this new WIP girl <33!
Tabitha - Eee, querying! So much good to luck to you! That's great that you're writing, too. & Thanks! <3
Monica - HAY girl! :D Oh man, when I saw that first pic I think my heart melted a little. (A trip to the hospital came soon after.) Hope things are going well! <33
Just wanted to let you know this post totally made my day. Hilarious. I loooovvvvveeeeee kittens (and cats, for that matter). Seriously, if you were to dangle a kitten in front of my nose like a carrot, I would pull a carriage in my attempts to get to it.
Okay, looking back that's probably not the best metaphor....let's just say I love kittens. When I was little I would ask for a kitten-that-would-stay-a-kitten-forever every year on my Christmas list. Your pictures make me want to dance/say AWWWWWWW/go to the pound right now and buy a cute little bundle of fur to call my own.
Yeah. Now I'm basically just writing a rather long post about cats. You and I, I think we have a lot in common :)
Kate, OMG I would so do the same carriage-wise. Are we really that weak in mind? (YES.) Awww @ stay-a-kitten-forever hehe. If only :D Oh well, cats are great too! And that is why they deserve a whole post. And a whole comment LOL. <3333
