Now, I know something happened during the wackiness... oh, yeah, THE YEAR CHANGED. I'd like to give a warm (if somewhat belated) welcome to the new year on the block, 2011! Actually, I wonder if it would be possible to really give 2011 a warm welcome... oh, hell, let's go for it. Come on in, 2K Double-1!
[Massive applause]
2011: Thanks, everyone, I really appreciate it.
PWK: So, 2011, how does it feel to be smashed between the decade-beginning 2010 and the famously apocalyptic 2012, effectively losing your own identity in the process?
2011: Well, uh... I don't exactly -
PWK: Don't answer that. What everybody really wants to know is: what are going to bring for us this year? Success? Joy? Doom? Relative mediocrity?
2011: I think that depends on the person and what they're determined to ach-
PWK: I disagree.
2011: You - what?
PWK: I think you are going to absolutely fantastic no matter what.
2011: Well, thanks, but -
PWK: And that's all the time we have! Thanks, 2011, and seriously - you're gonna be great!
2011: But I -
[Curtains close]
Wow! Quite an interesting interview, right there. In retrospect, 2011 may have had some points. What a year brings depends on what the person experiencing it is determined to achieve. That's why we have New Year's resolutions - to set the course for the coming twelve months.
Of course, when you're in the business of making resolutions, it's easy to get wrapped up in the things you lack, underperform at, and/or need to fix. In other words, you start the year off with a sense of previous failure layered beneath that sense of hope.
That's not necessarily a bad thing - in fact, it's a motivator. But I'd love to take a moment to remind everyone of the great things that have already been done. The key idea being: you have the power and the will to make even more greatness happen. So here's my question for you:
What's a resolution you didn't need to make this year?
In my case, although at the start of 2010 I was floundering re: how to buckle down and finish Autochromatic, by December I realized I'd learned how to sit myself down - and get stuff done. As 2011 begins, I know work-evading in writing will no longer be a (major) issue for me. Wh00t! I can now look at that achievement as proof that my 2011 goals won't be impossible.
Speaking of possibly wh00t-worthy things... how do y'all feel about a Hello 2011 Giveaway?
Let's do it. A $25 gift card to Barnes & Noble or BN.com - that's what goes to the winner! Leave a comment (e.g. your unneeded resolution) and you're officially entered to win (international is AOK). Extra entries apply, too: get +1 for Tweeting or blogging this baby and +1 for following PWK or being a follower. Contest ends at midnight on January 11th. Here's an easy Tweet format, if you'd like to use it:
A $25 B&N gift card is up for grabs over at @EmiliaPlater's Hello 2011 Giveaway! Comment to win: http://dft.ba/-pwk2011
With that, I hope you all have an absolutely fabulous beginning to this potentially fabulous new year. Here's to good friends, good times... and kittens! (Just thought I'd throw some kittens in there for health purposes.) YAY!

So great to see you back!

Um, I do stalk you here..
And now I'm gonna make others stalk you, too: http://twitter.com/#!/bee_muses/status/22199234652545026
<3!
Oh, Emilia - this post is so full of win. From the GPOK to the GIFs. I too applaud the 2011 interview. (:
My unneeded resolution? Pretty much the same as yours. I actually wrote TWO full length books last year, so I'm proud to say that I'm finally learning to discipline myself. FINALLY. :)
+1 entry for being a follower. :D
Great post!
Unneeded resolution: I will not let life just happen to me. I will make it happen.
+1 for being a follower
Ack, discipline is still a work-in-progress for me, but I'm getting better! And a no-longer-needed resolution is to get an agent :) Signing with mine was my biggest accomplishment of 2010, I think!
Sign me up for the giveaway - there are so many books coming out soon I want to buy! And +1 entry, since I'm a follower too.
May I say that your 2011 interview was the best interview since Tom Cruise jumped on Oprah's couch? As far as unneeded resolution, I'm going to say dieting. I've always been so hellbent on losing weight that exercising starts getting boring. This year, I'm just going to have fun while working out and just eat less. Period. :)

I've resolved (again) to learn to parallel park. It might take me all year to master this and my husband's patience may be gone by then, but I will find a closer parking space, darn it!
Anyway, I'm a follower of your blog and I Tweeted (@jenpickrell)
Thanks for the giveaway and for the interview - I look forward to seeing more of 2011.
Kudos to you for putting 2011 in its place! My unneeded resolution - trying to cook better meals (aka fresh) for my fam. Really, frozen food is just as good, and less time consuming.

I'm a follower so I guess that makes me +2.
Hm, 2011 didn't have a lot to say, did it?
Loved that interview!
And my unneeded resolution? In 2010 I resolved to finally--FINALLY--finish a novel. I did, so I guess I can check that off the 2011 list.
That was a great New Year's post. I wish I had something better to say, but I don't, so instead I'll just applaud you. *claps*
Also, I'm new to this here blog, so I don't really know much about anything but... I see you used the DFTBA short-link... Nerdfighter?
my resolution is to do what needs to be done, but only in a way that preserves my sanity.
would love to win the giftcard!!!
That interview made me laugh so much, especially because I hear the Price is Right announcer doing it. *shrugs*
My unneeded resolution is the entire concept of resolution. I stopped doing those year ago and just focus on goals. Hooray.
I'm a follower and I tweeted (http://twitter.com/#!/aliciagregoire/statuses/22315202334691328), so I'm also plus 3!
My unnecessary resolution was to learn all of the countries in Africa. I create all of these self-imposed learning challenges that almost never get completed. My one the year before was to learn the presidents in order. Didn't happen.
But, the fun thing is that I almost always retain some of the information, so I learn a little about a subject. I know more now than I did at the start of 2010!

Happy New Year, Emilia! Love your interview with 2011. *squishes 2011*
It's so much more difficult to think of an unneeded resolution than a resolution itself. I guess mine would be to get into medical schools, because I've decided that that isn't going to happen. :)
+ 1 entry (follower)
my unneeded resolution is to read 100 books this year. There is no point to make this sure thing a resolution as I'd do it anyway :)
Thank you for the giveaway!

My unneeded resolution? To work my butt off landing a literary agent. Now, I'll work off said butt in hopes of getting published :-)
2011 only means two things to me:
1. HP ENDS OMYGOD NO.
2. GRADUATION HECKYEAHH THEN STARING LE MYSTERY COLLEGE.

Not because I was a particularly excellent flosser last year, but because I've resigned myself to being mediocre.
And I still don't get cavities!

Best interview ever XP 2011 sounds very interesting
My unneeded resolution... hm...
Well, the only resolution I've actually come up with this year is to resolve not to make any resolutions... But that one was broken the second I made it XD does that count as unneeded? =)
Oh, and I'm a follower too XP I'm so forgetful sometimes...
My partner and I really enjoyed reading this blog post, I was just itching to know do you trade featured posts? I am always trying to find someone to make trades with and merely thought I would ask.
