You guys. I've been holding this in, hiding this away, for too long. I HAVE A SECRET.
This secret has been sucking my time. It's been sucking my brainpower. It's been sucking my will to live! No, it hasn't actually been doing that last one (I just can't resist a Wayne's World reference). In truth, it's been injecting me with such an uncontrollable fervor to live and write that it's making. Me. Wonder. If. I'll. Survive!
The secret is: I've started a new YA book. And it's not contemporary.
WHY HAS THIS BEEN A SECRET? I don't even know. Okay, I do: I've been scared. Ashamed, even. Why? That's a good question. I mean, what happened was, I was working for a while on that other book about the beach town and stuff, and man, I still love that project and hope to return it, but then - then - this new idea came along. Well, it less "came along" and more "slapped me in the brain, whooped beach-book's ass, then started moving its furniture in without permission."
Brain-slapping ideas = good. Right? So what did it matter if this idea was different from anything I'd ever written or dreamed of writing? Why should I be such a wuss in the face of a genre-switch?
Oh, genre. Some writers define themselves by theirs. Technically, if you're published, that's the advisable thing to do. It creates an identity for your readers to come back to when they want X and Y. Of course, writers of all breeds can genre-hop: whether you mix everything together or create a separate pen name for each hop, it's all fine and fun. That's what I've been telling myself these past few weeks. But...I adore contemporary/realistic YA, guys. It is what I've always written. So when I realized I needed to write this Idea, I felt a little like I was betraying something at my core. Plus, I was probably going to fail miserably. Contemporary: that was my place, my heart, ma gangsta hang (never let me say "gangsta" again)!
Or so I thought. As this new book has grown and flourished at a crazy pace, leaving me wide-eyed and breathless, my perspective has begun to shift.
For any writer, switching to a new genre - or literary format, or POV, or [insert Big Thing here] - can be a little like leaping over a canyon. That's a canyon filled with uncertainty, inexperience, and possibly some worry. For all anyone knows, you could fall flat on your face and have to crawl back to where you came from.
But part of being a writer means being brave. Being fearless. In the case of that question at the start of this post - it means jumping. In the words of George Prince, "Creativity is another word for courage."So I invite you to try and live that job description with me. Failure is possible - I know I'm wary of it - but without the possibility of failure, there would be no possibility of awesomeness. Some people call it a leap of faith. I call it: A LEAP OF AWESOME.
So what the heck is the subject matter of this new book I keep rambling about, anyway? I'm not set to spill that info just yet. But I can tell you I'm absolutely in
HYSTERIA
And it does not involve in any way...
Zombies, werewolves, vampires, vegetarian vampires, a dystopian or post-apocalyptic world, fairies, mermaids, elves, angels, reapers, demons, possessed dollies, a historical setting, a futuristic setting, precognition, postcognition, telekinesis, time travel, dream travel, ghosts, witches, spells, gods, superheroes, chatty animals, dragons, monsters, other assorted fantasy creatures, mind control (sort of), OR unicorns (I tried, I tried)
Maybe that will give you a hint. Or maybe I'm just being super annoying, hee, hee... Love you all like always! Have you ever made a leap of awesome? What was your experience like? Everyone have an amazing week, and I wish you all the best of luck with your writing projects, new and old! XOXO!

I felt exactly the same way when I made the leap from urban fantasy to contemporary! And now I'm writing a dystopian and my heart's all like, "This should be contemp!".
I tell you what's going to be really scary? When I finally get up the guts to have a go at writing that adult novel that's been sitting in the back of my mind for a while. Omg. How will I define myself as a writer if there's not a "YA" attached to whatever I'm writing?????
*has a post-apocalyptic moment*
Also. I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS NEW PROJECT OF YOURS <3 :D
I made the leap of awesome, and you are definitely right about calling it because it was truly amazing! I had been writing fantasy, then switched to more urban fantasy, and then made the big leap to contemporary fiction with no magical creatures or made up worlds at all. Totally thrilling and terrifying but also completely worth it! Can't wait to hear about your new story!
I think you'd be doing yourself a disservice to push the idea away just because it's not in your genre. Because you struggled with this so much I bet this will be your best book yet. :)
I wrote a supernatural YA for fun during NaNo, and I can't stop thinking about it. I'm really considering taking another look at it to start revising, but I'm a little nervous...maybe I'll take that leap like you suggested. :)
I've only ever written one novel, so I'm not sure I can call it a LEAP, but I am still re-writing it from 3rd person into 1st. It's made a world of difference for me.
Adore you all!!
Vee - OMG I NEED TO RESPOND TO YOUR EMAIL. Anyway :D You know my opinion on your awesomeness. Adult novel FTW! - you are going to rock that thing when you write it! You can attach yourself to me anytime. *wink, wink* (huh?) And thankchuu<33
Jessica - That is so flipping fabulous! Multiple leaps mean multiple returns in awesome :D :D I'm so glad you're enjoying dipping your toes in the contemporary pool! It's a great pool. Full of hot boys who could actually hypothetically meet in real life. (Don't call me out on that dream, it's true, it's truuue) <333
Tracey - Aww, omg... I can only hope! You are wonderful and wise :)
Pam - You should! If something makes you scared, it seems that's often a sign it's time to confront it head-on... and reap the rewards! <33 If you write it, it will be awesome. I deem this the truth :D
Matthew - That is a legit leap! POV is so important to the story, after all. I love, love 1st person. So much good luck to you! <3
Oh, I can totally relate to this. I spent all of my early years as a writer writing fantasy. This wasn't really surprising, as 90% of what I read back then was fantasy. It seriously didn't occur to me until relatively recently that I /could/ write a book without a fantasy element...and God, am I glad it did. I have no regrets about making the scary switch from YA fantasy to YA contemporary, although I still have a soft spot for a great fantasy book. :)
I WANT TO KNOW!
I want to make the leap of awesome to contemporary/realistic, but everything keeps turning into paranormal or quazi-magical realism or something. Maybe someday :) Can't wait to find out what your amazing project is!!
Ooo this is so EXCITING! :D I'm SO curious about your shiny new project, Emilia!
I think it's awesome that you've made THE LEAP OF AWESOME to a different genre. Yeah, yeah, sticking to one genre is great and all and even important when it comes to platform consistency and building up a readership, blah dee blah, but I think it's so important for writers to not limit themselves. If we're passionate about a project, even if it's a total 180 from what we usually write, we simply MUST write it. We'd be doing ourselves a disservice if we didn't.
LEAP AWAY, Emilia. LEAP.
I love secret projects! Curiouser and curiouser...
On the flipside, I've always wondered if I could write contemporary, but a magical element always muscles its way into the story.
Good luck with zee new book! Sounds exciting!
<3
Hey, good luck on your leap of awesome!! I recently took a leap as well. I went from (a brief spin in) paranormal to contemporary to a mix between dystopian and fantasy. That's what I'm working on now. A very big change from what I'm usually used to, for sure.
BTW, just a random question: I saw your post on YA Highway, about your college acceptance--congrats! What are you hoping to major in?
If YA Highway doesn't link to this on Friday, then life won't make sense. This is incredible advice that every writer should follow - NEVER BE AFRAID.
By the way, love the title!
Sam - Don't we all? That is so, so great that you made the switch and it turned out well! It seems like these things nearly always do. Keep rockin' contemp! <3
Kirsten - I can't wait to tell everyone about it!! :D Someday you will write realistic and it will be EPIC. But for now... you are the queen of unrealism! <33
Claire - WRITE THAT THANG BABBEH! *untz* hahaha ily ily. I am leaping... and it is awesome! And having you behind me makes it even awesomer! :D
Kathy - Hey, it wouldn't be as magical if it didn't have the muscle power, amirite? hehe. Thank you so much! <3
Layton (such a great name!) - That sounds like a big change that is big on the awesomeness. Yay! Re: major, probably psychology or sociology :) "Character study" as I like to call it, lol!
SSR - Did you know I adore you?? Wh00t wh00t! I love YOUR blog title! :D
OMG I know what you're talking about!
After Rosie, my debut, I've had this leap of awesome. From literary fiction to Sci-Fi/Fantasy. Idk how but everything is just so exciting and so fun and so awesome and it does leave me breathless!
Good luck with Hysteria! Wish me luck with my LOA (Leap Of Awesome) - Skyquake.
"Creativity is another word for courage" <-- I think this is so true. Congrats on listening to the little voice in your head that said this idea was worth pursuing, and for making your LEAP OF AWESOME.
I made a leap of awesome myself, genre-wise, not too long ago. It was scary and a bit terrifying, but I was just so in love with the "idea" that I took a risk and hammered out the story. Turns out, that ended up being the book that got me my agent.
So excited for you and this new venture! Here's to hoping it's your best story yet :)
This is GREAT. So proud of you, Emilia! I've actually heard tales of writers who went outside their "allotted" genre, and used pseudonyms just because it wouldn't fit with their readership. So congratulations! Know we'll always support you. :)
Mariam - (5 days later, augh! lol) Yay, yay, yay breathlessness! :D It's an amazing feeling to take a risk creatively. hee, LOA indeed! I wish you so much luck girl!! <3
Erin - OMG, how awesome! The risk paid off big time. S'cause you rock, Erin! WH00T!
Yahong - That is a really cool thing that happens in the publishing world. One that must require bravery :) Thanks so much for the congrats! <3
