"Creativity is another word for courage" <-- I think this is so true. Congrats on listening to the little voice in your head that said this idea was worth pursuing, and for making your LEAP OF AWESOME.

I made a leap of awesome myself, genre-wise, not too long ago. It was scary and a bit terrifying, but I was just so in love with the "idea" that I took a risk and hammered out the story. Turns out, that ended up being the book that got me my agent.

So excited for you and this new venture! Here's to hoping it's your best story yet :)

After Rosie, my debut, I've had this leap of awesome. From literary fiction to Sci-Fi/Fantasy. Idk how but everything is just so exciting and so fun and so awesome and it does leave me breathless!

Hey, good luck on your leap of awesome!! I recently took a leap as well. I went from (a brief spin in) paranormal to contemporary to a mix between dystopian and fantasy. That's what I'm working on now. A very big change from what I'm usually used to, for sure.

BTW, just a random question: I saw your post on YA Highway, about your college acceptance--congrats! What are you hoping to major in?

I think it's awesome that you've made THE LEAP OF AWESOME to a different genre. Yeah, yeah, sticking to one genre is great and all and even important when it comes to platform consistency and building up a readership, blah dee blah, but I think it's so important for writers to not limit themselves. If we're passionate about a project, even if it's a total 180 from what we usually write, we simply MUST write it. We'd be doing ourselves a disservice if we didn't.

Oh, I can totally relate to this. I spent all of my early years as a writer writing fantasy. This wasn't really surprising, as 90% of what I read back then was fantasy. It seriously didn't occur to me until relatively recently that I /could/ write a book without a fantasy element...and God, am I glad it did. I have no regrets about making the scary switch from YA fantasy to YA contemporary, although I still have a soft spot for a great fantasy book. :)

I made the leap of awesome, and you are definitely right about calling it because it was truly amazing! I had been writing fantasy, then switched to more urban fantasy, and then made the big leap to contemporary fiction with no magical creatures or made up worlds at all. Totally thrilling and terrifying but also completely worth it! Can't wait to hear about your new story!

I felt exactly the same way when I made the leap from urban fantasy to contemporary! And now I'm writing a dystopian and my heart's all like, "This should be contemp!".

I tell you what's going to be really scary? When I finally get up the guts to have a go at writing that adult novel that's been sitting in the back of my mind for a while. Omg. How will I define myself as a writer if there's not a "YA" attached to whatever I'm writing?????
